Does Your Child Have ADHD?

It’s not always easy to spot whether your child is displaying symptoms of ADHD.

While only a qualified pediatrician will be able to diagnose your child with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) often times the ADHDonly way that a child is diagnosed in the first place is because a parent notices changes in their child’s behavior that affects their social, school and personal lives. Learn more about the common signs and symptoms of childhood ADHD and when to see our Longwood pediatricians, Dr. Jag Ambwani and Dr. Dolly Ubhrani for an evaluation.

Ask yourself this: Does my child…

  • Have trouble staying focused or on task?
  • Make careless mistakes?
  • Jump from one activity to another usually without finishing the first activity?
  • Lose or misplace items like homework, books, toys, etc?
  • Interrupt conversations and have trouble waiting their turn?
  • Fidget and squirm when having to sit still
  • Often seem to be daydreaming or not paying attention when spoken to?
  • Often forget to do things even after several reminders
  • Seem easily distracted most of the time

Now tally up how many “yeses” you had. If you are noticing that your child displays many of these symptoms then it might be worth talking with our Longwood pediatricians. While many of these symptoms are also normal childhood behaviors it can be difficult to determine whether this is just something your child will grow out of or whether they may have ADHD. A good rule of thumb is, if they are dealing with these symptoms regularly and it’s impacting school performance, relationships and home life then it’s time to talk to a pediatrician.

Since ADHD stands for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder many people assume that children must have trouble with concentration as well as display signs of hyperactivity in order to have ADHD, but this isn’t always the case. The three most common symptoms of ADHD are inattentiveness, hyperactivity, and impulsivity and while some children may display all three behaviors some children may only have trouble with inattentiveness or hyperactivity.
